The Department of Clinical Medicine of the BNI has 3 wards with a total of 68 beds for in-patients and an out-patient unit that are financed by refunding through health insurances. In 1997, 1,376 in-patients were treated and approx. 5,300 patients visited the out-patient unit. More than 50 % of patients were sent to the clinic because of a suspected tropical disease. For emergency cases, the Department of Clinical Medicine maintains a 24-hour-stand-by service. Numerous telephone inquiries by physicians and patients are answered daily, sometimes more than 30 per day accumulating to more than 9,000 per year. In addition, the department offers advice in travel medicine, in 1997 there were approx. 13,000 such inquiries, and approx. 5,000 vaccinations were performed. For the States of Hamburg, Bremen, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia the department maintains two high-safety containment beds designed for treatment and isolation of patients with highly contagious infectious diseases.
Besides these efforts in patient care members of the department carry out research projects, financially supported by various funding organizations or by research funds of the Institute. These projects are mainly concerned with malaria and AIDS.
